NEW Dates for the Implementation of the Condo Act (and the Condo Management Services Act)

The Ministry of Government and Consumer Services has just announced the dates by which most of the changes to the Condominium Act and to the Condominium Management Services Act will come into force.

New dates for the implementation of the legislative changes

Expect most changes to the Condo Act, including the implementation of the new tribunal and of the licensing of managers under the Condo Management Services Act to come into effect as early as November 1, 2017.

The new Condo Authority of Ontario will be designated as the condo authority and will become responsible for the administration of certain provisions of the Condo Act, including the management and oversight of the tribunal as of September 1st, 2017. More info on the CAO on their website.

The new Condo Management Regulatory Authority of  Ontario will be responsible to administer the Condominium Management Services Act including the licensing of condo managers and providers as of November 1st, 2017. More info on the CAMRAO on their website.

Expect the remainders of the Condominium Management Services Act to come into effect on February 1st, 2018.

Still ahead

The Province is still working on a series of new forms under the Condo Act (such as the information certificate, or the preliminary notice of owners meeting and the formal notice of owners meeting).  These forms will make it a lot easier for condo corporations and owners to comply with the new requirements.

The Province is also working on a set of fact sheets to help Ontarians better understand the changes to the Condo Act. It will also work on the education and exam requirement for condo managers (no word yet on the mandatory training for directors…)

Seeking your input

The province will be seeking public input on the following:

  • The public registry of condo corporations;
  • The complaints procedure, code of ethics and insurance requirements for condo managers.

Fasten your seatbelts.  Sharp turn ahead!
